How to Change Display Settings in Windows XP

The display settings for Windows XP determine the screen resolution and color quality that is displayed on your monitors. The "Display Properties" dialog box is used to adjust these two components so you can get the look you want for Windows XP.

  • Windows XP Operating System
  1. Step 1

    Click the "Start" button on the bottom left of your computer to display the Start menu. Choose the "Control Panel" option from the right side of the Start menu. The "Control Panel" window will open onto your desktop.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click the "Display" icon from the Control Panel to open the "Display Properties" dialog box. You can then select the "Settings" tab from the top of the dialog box.

  3. Step 3

    Slide the bar under the "Screen resolution" setting of the "Display Properties" dialog box to decrease or increase the screen resolution. The chosen resolution will be displayed under the sliding bar.

  4. Step 4

    Use the "Color quality" drop-down list to choose the type of quality you want your computer to use. You can choose to have the color quality be "Medium," "High" or "Highest."

  5. Step 5

    Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the "Display Properties" dialog box to apply the settings. If you are not happy with the settings you can change them as instructed in the steps above.

  6. Step 6

    Choose the "OK" button when you are happy with your display setting changes. The "Display Properties" dialog box will close and the settings will be saved.
