Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Teach your child she should never approach a stray dog or a dog that is on the other side of a fence. If a dog is with its owner, then the child should ask the owner for permission to pet the dog before approaching.
Step2
Warn your child that he shouldn't approach any dog that is exhibiting signs of aggression, such as growling, showing teeth or barking ferociously. Your child should also stay away from a dog that is eating or playing with a toy. Avoiding dangerous dogs or defensive dogs is vital to preventing dog bites.
Step3
Model how to approach a dog. Show your toddler how to approach quietly and calmly from the side. Demonstrate how to walk without quick or sudden movements, such as lunging or running.
Step4
Instruct your child to hold her hand out to the dog before attempting to pet the dog. She should allow the dog to sniff her hand.
Step5
Tell your toddler that he should always keep his face away from the dog's face, even if he knows the dog and feels comfortable with the dog.
Step6
Caution your child that she shouldn't put her hands near the dog's eyes or pull on the dog's fur. Instead, she should gently stroke the dog's fur in direction the hair grows.
