1
Measure and cut a piece of flat elastic (designed for waistbands) so it's long enough to wrap around your ponytail a few times (see Resources).
-
2
Cut a piece of colorful fabric about 4-inches longer than the elastic (or even longer if you want the ponytail holder to have more bunches and ridges) and three to four times as wide.
-
-
3
Fold the fabric in half, lengthwise, with the "right" sides facing each other. Use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to sew the edges together, leaving the short ends completely open. Turn the fabric "tube" right side out, using a pencil to help push the fabric through if you're having a tough time.
-
4
Push the elastic through the fabric. Clip a small safety pin to end of the elastic to make it easier to guide.
-
5
Bunch the fabric into the middle of the elastic strip so you can use a needle and thread to stitch the ends of the elastic together securely. Pull the fabric evenly around the elastic and sew those ends together, as well.
-
6
Save time by starting with a ponytail elastic and tying 3-inch long fabric strips of fabric or wide ribbon in simple knots around it until it's completely covered with a "fringe" of fabric. You can also secure your ponytail with a plain elastic and tie a swatch of vibrant fabric around it like a short scarf.
