When it comes to playing offense during a football game, small adjustments can make a big difference. For instance, the simple manner of how you "cut" during a post route can be the difference between an interception and a touchdown. Here are some things to remember next time you are running a post route as a receiver.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Football
  • Receiver
  • Defender
  • Quarterback
  1. Step 1

Know your job during the post route before the game is ever played. So much of every sport is mental. And when it comes to football, knowing your responsibility during each play is absolutely essential. Make sure you memorize how many steps you need to take before making the cut in each post route play. After all, some post patterns are quick and others are quite deep. This kind of mental homework will give you an advantage on the defense during game play.

  2. Step 2

Burst off the line of scrimmage in a straight line. Remember this is not a slant route where you run on a continuous angle. This is a post. The whole objective is to get the defense back-pedaling on their heels, wondering which way you are going to go before you make the cut.

  3. Step 3

Cut towards the middle of the field in one decided motion. The phrase "turning on a dime" is appropriate here. You want your change of direction to be so sudden that the defense doesn't know what just hit them.

  4. Step 4

Look for the ball and extend your hands so that you are ready to receive the football. You can't catch what you don't see. And since you've been concealing your pattern to the defense as you burst off the line, you need to turn your head as soon as you make the cut. Locate the football and make the catch.

  5. Step 5

Go for additional yards after the catch. Remember that as you make your initial cut, the entire defense has now switched direction to come after you. The minute you make the catch, decide whether you will continue on your path or cut back in your original direction to throw off the defense.

Tips & Warnings
  • A football post route refers to a route where the receiver heads straight off the line of scrimmage and then cuts suddenly toward midfield in line with the goal post in the end zone--hence, the "post route."
