When it comes to playing football, the slightest advantage can produce the biggest results on the scoreboard. For instance, how a receiver properly runs and catches a ball during a post route. Here are a few tricks of the trade that will leave the defense in the dust.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach the line of scrimmage so that you give absolutely nothing away. A good defensive player will notice if you are suddenly wiping your hands or tightening your gloves. They'll recognize this as a tip that the football is going to be thrown to you on the next play.

  2. Step 2

Burst off the line and run your post route. As soon as the ball is snapped, work on beating your defender to where the football is to be thrown. Whether you're headed to the middle or the sidelines, you want that defender a step behind your hip.

  3. Step 3

Turn your head and look for the football. After the pre-determined number of steps in the post route, turn and look to see if the football is coming your way.

  4. Step 4

Raise your hands so that they are in the ready position to receive the ball. Remember to keep your hands in front of you. This way your body will between where the football is supposed to go and the defender.

  5. Step 5

Make adjustments to the post route as the football descends to you. In a perfect world every throw would be right on target. Unfortunately, most throws are slightly off. When you adjust to the position of the ball, the important thing is to always protect the ball by placing the positioning of your body between where the football will land and the defender.

  6. Step 6

Catch the football with two hands and immediately bring it into your body for security. The moment the ball hits your hands, it is fair game for the defender to either tackle you or knock the ball from your hands. As you bring the football into your body secure it with both hands so that you interlock it with a hand underneath and on top of the football.

  7. Step 7

Look for extra yards after the catch. Now that the ball is secure, look for open field in which you can gain some additional yards for your team. Just be prepared that the defense will all be focused on you until you are tackled.
