Pockets are very useful on a garment bag because they can hold small items such as jewelry that can't be hung inside. They can also be decorative. Pockets are relatively easy to add using a coordinating fabric, and should be done before the garment bag is sewn together.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use the tape measure and pencil to trace a pocket onto the wrong side of the coordinating fabric. Add 1/2 inch to all sides to allow for the seam.

  2. Step 2

Cut out the first pocket, then use it as a template to cut out a second pocket the same size.

  3. Step 3

Fold the edges of the pocket over a half inch and press with an iron. Use scissors to trim the corners so the fold will be flat all the way around.

  4. Step 4

Sew the top edge of the pocket. Don't forget to reverse direction at the ends of the seams to anchor them.

  5. Step 5

Turn the pocket over and pin it to the front panel of the garment bag prior to sewing it all together. Use the measuring tape to make sure the pocket is straight and in the right position so when you add the second pocket, they will be symmetrically placed on the garment bag.

  6. Step 6

Sew around the other three sides of the pocket, lifting the presser foot as you turn the corners.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the size of the user of the garment bag in mind. Small pockets on an adult's bag will be useless because the adult won't be able to insert his or her hand. A child who may be too small to always carry the bag vertically may lose items out of a large pocket.
