How to Work With Props in Clown Routines

Props are a major part of any clowns' routine and allows the showcase of the persona. Use props to keep the audience's attention, add variety and fun to your clown routine. There are a number of classic and innovative ways to utilize props into your clown routine.

  1. Step 1

    Start with the classics a rubber chicken, harpo horn, balls for juggling and honking nose are popular because their easy to work into a routine.

  2. Step 2

    Turn your clown costume into a prop. Put on several hats for juggling, pin a water squirting flower to your chest and stuff your pockets with silly squeaky toys.

  3. Step 3

    Change your props to reflect different clown characters. A clown that performs for children in the hospital might use a stethoscope; a cowboy clown should have a cowboy hat, rope and boots.

  4. Step 4

    Plan your props for the type of event. If you're participating in a parade, use camera, mini accordion and a magic wand to interact with your audience while on the move.

    Consider your audience type. Loud, bright and colorful props work great for children's parties and parades. For a business party, fewer props are necessary.
