Before you cut into that mouth watering watermelon, consider turning it into a lovely and unique vase for cut flowers. A watermelon vase is a great conversation piece for a barbecue or summer brunch, and will keep the flowers cool and fresh for several days.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 evenly shaped watermelon, small or medium
  • Sharp knives
  • Melon baller or spoon
  • Pencil
  1. Step 1

Select a symmetrically shaped watermelon so that the vase will be stable. Choose any sized watermelon you like, but a smaller melon will be much easier to work with.

  2. Step 2

Cut across one end of the watermelon to create a sturdy, flat bottom for the vase. Be careful to only cut the the rind of the melon, not the flesh.

  3. Step 3

Use a sharp knife to slice off the top of the watermelon. Scoop out the melon with a melon baller or sturdy spoon, until the watermelon is completely cleaned out. Set the scooped watermelon aside to use in a salad or snack.

  4. Step 4

Cut decorative scallops or points around the top edge of the watermelon with a sharp knife. Use a pencil to draw out your design before you cut.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add an additional decorative touch, tie a colorful ribbon around your watermelon vase.
  • Fill the watermelon vase with freshly cut flowers. If the stems are sturdy, press them directly into the watermelon rind. Otherwise, put a piece of floral sponge into the bottom of the watermelon vase, and add a small amount of fresh water.
