Garden gnomes nearly became extinct after the World Wars that ravaged Germany, where they originated in the early 1800s. Then in the 1960s, clever, campy gnomes started appearing on landscapes in the United States and abroad. The folklore of their ancestors has followed them, so that any fun-loving or mischievous gnome will bring you luck.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out some of the websites listed in the Resources section of this article for some really funny garden gnomes. They come with their bare butt sticking up in the air and in a multitude of poses. Get a gnome with recordable talking innards or gnomes that fart when you pass them. Depending on how far you're willing to go, it's out there.

  2. Step 2

Look beyond the garden variety for the funny fellows. They've become so popular and recognizable that they're now on t-shirts, complete with sayings and smart-alecky remarks, on coffee mugs, bumper stickers, soap-on-a-rope and jumping gnome-in-a-box.

  3. Step 3

Hunt flea markets and yard sales. You can find a treasure trove of funny garden gnomes that have been sold or re-gifted by those who may not appreciate their humor.

  4. Step 4

Trade funny garden gnomes with other collectors. Get with other gnome collectors online and in person to compare notes and new funny finds.
