Buying and selling property constitutes a legal transaction with complicated contracts and financing. Depending on the nature of the deal, it may be wise to engage the service of a real estate attorney to protect your interests. The local Bar Association can provide the names of area attorneys who specialize in real estate law.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Regard the first meeting as a business consultation. Arrive on time and dress professionally. Let the attorney take the lead to ask questions to get familiar with the situation.

  2. Step 2

Allow the attorney to guide the conversation. Understand that she can quickly hone in on relevant facts and background information. Wait to be asked for specifics rather than blurting out the details of the entire situation upfront.

  3. Step 3

Take along all relevant documentation, diagrams and other helpful information. Be organized and well prepared. Create a list of questions for the attorney.

  4. Step 4

Feel free to share information with the lawyer, even in the absence of a final decision to contract for his services. Be upfront. Understand that attorney-client privilege applies and protects the confidentiality of anything that is discussed.

  5. Step 5

Be prepared to listen carefully and take notes of any advice on how to proceed. Ask relevant questions to clarify before leaving the meeting.

  6. Step 6

Ask about the fee structure and what to expect in the way of a retainer or legal services agreement. Be prepared to make a deposit or pay the retainer upon making the decision to hire the attorney. Bring along a credit card or checkbook.

  7. Step 7

Inquire about the next phase in the process. Make sure the attorney has updated contact information and methods of communication are well established.
