Mention the word triathlon and most people familiar with the sport think about swimming, biking and running. But winter triathlon is a different sport altogether. Winter triathlon consists of running, mountain biking and cross-country skiing performed in that order and on snow. The standard distances covered are 5 miles running, 7.5 miles mountain biking and 6.2 miles cross-country skiing.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discover races in the United States by visiting the USA Triathlon website. Winter triathlon is increasing in popularity in the United States. Most U.S. races are held in the Rocky Mountain area, but you can find races in other states.

  2. Step 2

Check out races in Europe by visiting the International Triathlon Union website. Because winter triathlon is more popular in Europe than the United States, you will have a larger selection of events from which to choose.

  3. Step 3

Look for races in your local area. If you live in an area where it snows in the winter, contact local race directors. You can find local events and contact information through the USA Triathlon website.

  4. Step 4

Learn the rules and consider putting on your own winter triathlon. You can enlist the help of a local triathlon club, ski group or mountain bike group.

  5. Step 5

Anticipate more races to be scheduled in the future. The International Triathlon Union is making a push for winter triathlon to be included in the 2010 Olympic Games held in Vancouver, Canada.
