Making a soda bottle volcano is a messy science experiment for kids and should be done outside. The following steps will show you two different ways to make a soda bottle volcano.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Use Soda Water and Mentos

  1. Step 1

Open a roll of Mentos candies.

  2. Step 2

Stack the Mentos candies into a test tube, which is narrow enough to keep all the candies in a stack. If you do not have a test tube, you can make a tube by rolling up a piece of paper thin enough to keep the candies in a stack.

  3. Step 3

Hold your hand at the opening of the tube to keep the candies inside until you are ready to put them into the bottle and turn it upside down. You can also use another object such as an index card at the opening of the tube.

  4. Step 4

Set a 2-liter bottle of soda on the ground outside and open the lid.

  5. Step 5

Place the tube of candies over the opening of the soda and take your hand away from the opening of the tube so that all the candies fall in.

  6. Step 6

Watch as the contents of the bottle explode out of the bottle like a volcano.

  7. Use Vinegar and Baking Soda

  8. Step 1

Empty a small soda bottle of its contents by pouring it into a glass or drinking it.

  9. Step 2

Pour vinegar into the empty soda bottle so that it is at least 1/3 full.

  10. Step 3

Measure out 1 heaping tsp. of baking soda and pour it onto a sheet of tissue.

  11. Step 4

Roll up the tissue around the baking soda so that it is small enough to fit through the neck of the bottle.

  12. Step 5

Put the tissue inside the bottle and place your hand over the top to keep the gas that the chemical reaction emits inside of the bottle.

  13. Step 6

Shake the bottle with your hand pressed over the top for about 10 to 20 seconds.

  14. Step 7

Take your hand away from the top of the bottle and watch the vinegar explode from the bottle.

Tips & Warnings
  • If using a larger bottle of soda, you will need to use more baking soda than are in the instructions.
  • Make sure to aim the soda bottle with its exploding contents away from people and pets.
