When most people think of pico de gallo, they think of a dish that closely resembles salsa, with tomatoes, onions and peppers. However, Pico de gallo is also a spicy fruit salad that originates in Mexico. The addition of Chile powder gives this dish its spicy kick. You can also make a spicy whipped cream topping for your pico de gallo.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fruits
  • Lime juice
  • Salt and Chile powder or pico de gallo seasoning
  • Whipped cream
  • Cayenne pepper
  1. Step 1

Choose the seasonal fruits that you would like to add to your pico de gallo. Commonly used fruits include honeydew melon, cantaloupe, oranges, jicama, apples, cucumbers, mangoes, nectarines, plums, papaya, pineapple and kiwi. Start your pico de gallo with at least three different fruits, but use more if you wish. Cut the fruits into bite-sized pieces, or about one square inch. Try to have about the same amount of each fruit.

  2. Step 2

Toss this fruit mixture with lime juice. You can either use fresh squeezed or juice from a bottle. The amount of juice you need will depend on the size of your salad. Begin with 1 tbsp. and add more if needed. Next, add about a teaspoon of salt or to taste. Mix thoroughly and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least one hour before serving.

  3. Step 3

Add chile powder immediately before serving. Start with 1 tsp. and add more to taste if desired.

  4. Step 4

Make a cayenne whipped cream topping for your pico de gallo. Mix 1/2 a teaspoon of cayenne powder with two cups of whipped cream. Put a large spoonful on top of the pico de gallo to serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Instead of using salt and chile powder, you can use pre-made pico de gallo seasoning from the store. You can find it in the ethnic section of your grocery store.
