Add pizzazz to your child's next dress-up party by helping the kids create paper masks that coordinate with each outfit. By using mostly recycled materials, you'll be able to make colorful and customized accessories that are as inexpensive as they are fun.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scrap cardstock
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard
  • Magazine advertisements
  • Adhesives
  • Markers
  • Embellishments
  • Hole punch
  • Elastic cording
  1. Step 1

Use a pencil to draw a simple "8" shape onto a piece of scrap cardstock or typing paper. Cut the shape with scissors, then measure against your child's face to determine where the eye openings should sit and to ensure the center is high enough to allow your child to breath easily.

  2. Step 2

Affix the paper mask to a sturdy piece of recycled cardboard to make it more durable. Use an empty box from a soft drink 12-pack, for example. Use sharp scissors or a craft knife to cut the mask out.

  3. Step 3

Decorate the mask with a collage of colorful paper. Let your kids tear scraps from pretty magazine advertisements, old wrapping paper, greeting cards or decorative paper left over from other craft projects. Fasten the pieces together with a glue stick, allowing the edges to overlap slightly.

  4. Step 4

Add more details with stickers or other dimensional objects you have around the house such as buttons, feathers, foam shapes or beads.

  5. Step 5

Punch a hole on each side of the mask and add a length of elastic cording to secure the mask to your child's head. If you don't have any cording on hand and would rather not buy a spool, simply recycle a shoelace, ribbon or embroidery floss that you've got around the house.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your kids would like to create paper masks in the shapes of lions, pigs, cats, dogs or koalas, download a free template to make the process easier. Be sure to cut ample eye and nose holes so their vision and breathing won't be impaired (see Resources).
