Home videos are a great way to record family events, daily activities and milestones. Families have been using video cameras to make home videos for decades and the home video camera can do more than ever before.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Video camera
  • Tripod (optional)
  • Video editing computer software (optional)
Step1
Practice shooting a few test videos so you can learn how to keep the camera steady and make use of the best lighting. In addition, get a good video editing program if you plan to put the videos on your computer or on a DVD. With a video editing program you can add titles, edit sound and much more.
Step2
Record anything you like. Chances are you're going to record birthday parties, your baby's first steps, family vacation and graduations. However, remember to record daily activities as well. This will help you remember things that you may have otherwise forgotten, such as baking cookies as a family, playing with the puppy and singing songs.
Step3
Remember rules of good video recording so that you get the best home video. The main light source, such as the sun, a window or light bulb needs to be behind the person taking the video. In addition, you need to keep the camera as still as possible so the viewers don't get motion sickness. Use a tripod if possible.
Step4
Edit your video with an editing program on your computer if possible. You can add the date on which you shot the video, cute titles, rolling credits and scene transitions. In addition, you can change colors and contrast in the video if it needs improvement.
Step5
Put the video on either a VHS tape or a DVD if you want. If you edited the video on your computer, you won't be able to put the edited version on a VHS tape. Also, know that if you don't have a DVD writeable drive, the same applies to a DVD. However, if you are able to put the video on your computer, you can still email the video to friends and family. You can also store the video online so that you don't lose it.
