How to Look Preppy Without Breaking the Bank

The preppy style is back in full force, but not everyone can afford the cost usually associated with these clothes. If you want to dress in a preppy style without breaking the bank, you'll need to do some careful planning. Fortunately, you don't need a real pearl necklace or an entire wardrobe from Ambercrombie to be preppy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase clothing that you can mix and match. A single dress isn't very versatile. However, a skirt can easily be paired up with a variety of tops to create different looks. When you buy clothing, make sure that you have a couple of different things in your current wardrobe that already go with the new piece.

  2. Step 2

Buy a pair of quality shoes in a neutral color. These may be a bit more expensive, but quality shoes often last much longer than their cheaper counterparts. Make sure you select a pair of shoes that will go with most of your outfits.

  3. Step 3

Go to an out of the way thrift store. Most people know that you can score name brand clothes at bargain basement prices when you go to thrift stores. Unfortunately, this means that thrift stores in some neighborhoods are picked over and it's hard to find a good bargain. Go to a store that's out of the way and you're more likely to find the great deals you're after.

  4. Step 4

Have your hair styled at a training school. If you're lucky enough to live near a school that trains budding hair designers, then you can easily get your hair done for less money than at a regular salon. The process may take longer, since they have to check each step with their teacher, but it's well worth the wait.

Tips & Warnings
  • The real key to adopting a preppy style is being well groomed. If you make sure that your clothes are always in good condition and your grooming skills are up to par, it won't matter if your clothes are not name brand.
