Things You'll Need:
- Tea tree oil
- Lavender oil
- Rosemary oil
- Eucalyptus oil
- Peppermint oil
- Pure olive carrier oil or pure coconut carrier oil
- Shampoo
- Shower cap
- Vinegar
- Lice comb
-
Step 1
Cut your child's hair as short as you can. A daughter probably won't let you cut much, but you can style it in a cute bob. However, lice seem to infest girls' hair more often than boys' hair. This may have something to do with the length of the hair.
-
Step 2
Make a natural lice shampoo. Combine five drops each of tea tree oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil with 5 tsps. of pure olive carrier oil or pure coconut carrier oil.
-
Step 3
Know that peppermint and eucalyptus oil can slow down the respiration of small children, especially those less than 5 years of age. Don't use those oils on smaller children. If you are concerned about these side effects in children over the age of 5 years, eliminate these oils and use more of the other essential oils instead.
-
Step 4
Add a little bit of shampoo to this mixture, and apply it to the hair. Make sure you completely saturate all of the hair, including the roots. Cover the hair with a shower cap. Let the hair sit for about an hour. The child should sit outside, where she has plenty of ventilation.
-
Step 5
Wash the hair twice with regular shampoo. Follow with a vinegar rinse, and wash it all out with hot water; be careful not to burn the child's scalp. Comb the hair, and remove any remaining lice or nits with a lice comb. When you remove them, put them in a bowl of vinegar so that they die.
-
Step 6
Clean anything that your child came in contact with during the last few weeks. This includes clothing, hair accessories, toys, bedding and towels. Wash these items in hot water and then dry on the hot setting in the dryer. If you can't wash them, put them in plastic bags and keep the bags sealed for 2 weeks.
-
Step 7
Check the hair for lice and eggs again the day following the initial treatment. If you see any, repeat this entire process to get the rid of the rest of them.

on 7/1/2009 There is no need to cut your childs hair unless it is totally matted from lice. There are non-toxic enzymes that can be purchased to kill lice. There is no need to make up a homemade recipe that might cause respitory problem. http://www.fairylicemothers.com/Shopping.cfm
