Things You'll Need:
- Flat head screwdriver
- Rubbing alcohol
- Pliers
- Hairspray
-
Step 1
Check the diameter of your handlebar before you head to the store. Purchase grips based on comfort and size. Consider lock down grips if you intend to change them out for different riding conditions regularly.
-
Step 2
Remove the old grips by loosening shifters and brake assemblies. Slide the assemblies as far in on the handlebar as possible.
-
Step 3
Slide a small flat tip screwdriver carefully under the grip to avoid scratching the handlebar and squirt a generous amount of water or rubbing alcohol onto the handlebar. Twist and pull the grip until it comes off or pull with pliers. Cut the grip off the handlebar if you're unable to remove it. Blowing compressed air under the grip is also an easy way to remove them if you have a compressor available.
-
Step 4
Clean the handlebar with rubbing alcohol and wipe dry. Poke a small hole in the end of closed grips to release trapped air. Spray a small amount of hairspray onto the bar and quickly begin to work the bike grip onto the handlebar with a twisting motion. Verify the grip has worked fully onto the bar and that it's resting in the position you desire for comfort.
-
Step 5
Secure lock down grips by screwing the locking assembly into place taking care not to damage the bar. Adjust the grip position to your personal preference.
-
Step 6
Move the shifters and brake assemblies back into place and tighten them down.
