Having the wrong tools or worse, no tools when you need them makes even simple jobs difficult. Plumbing requires many specialized tools that can save the day when you need them and building your plumbing tool kit is as easy as a trip to the store.

From Quick Guide: Plumbing 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toolbox
  • First-aid kit
  • Safety goggles
  • Gloves
  • Extension cord
  • Drywall saw
  • Utility knife
  • Plunger
  • Auger
  • 10, 14 and 18-inch pipe wrenches
  • 6 and 12-inch adjustable wrenches
  • Tubing cutter
  • 1/2-inch circular wire brush
  • Torch
  • Cordless drill
  • Flat file
  • Rat-tail file
  1. Step 1

Start with a large toolbox to dedicate specifically for your plumbing tool kit. Most plumbing tools are specific to their task and knowing where they are in a plumbing emergency can save you a great deal of money and heartache. The toolbox needs to be large enough to hold the big wrenches you need.

  2. Step 2

Think safety first and include goggles and gloves in your toolbox. Add a small first-aid kit with eye rinse and adhesive bandages.

  3. Step 3

Add a collection of wrenches to your kit starting with size 10, 14 and 18 pipe wrenches for the bigger projects. Toss in a small and large adjustable wrench for those trick nuts in impossible to reach places. A small socket set and 5-sided plumbing fixture kit are always handy to have along as well.

  4. Step 4

Make room for a small and standard tubing cutter for work on copper tubing. Slip in a selection of round wire brushed for cleaning ends or just getting the gunk out of old pipes.

  5. Step 5

Keep a power drill and torch nearby for more complicated jobs. A reciprocating and drywall saw are also useful if you need to gain access to pipes behind walls.

  6. Step 6

Share some of your usual tools such as a hammer, screwdrivers and tape measure if you don't want to purchase them now but keep track of where they are kept for quick retrieval.
