Instructions

    • 1

Choose 100 percent cotton fabric and batting for making your potato baker bags. Cotton is safest for use in the microwave; however, all microwaves vary and each has its own power levels. It is a good idea to test the material in your microwave before making your bags to ensure the material does not melt and is safe for use.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of your chosen fabric and one piece of batting to 10 by 22 inches. Place the two fabric pieces together so the outside of the fabric is facing each other, then put the batting on top of the fabric. Pin the 10 inch sides together using straight pins.

    • 3

Sew a 1/2 inch seam along both of the 10 inch sides, while the bag is still inside out. Turn the bag right side out, and then sew both 10 inch sides again. You now have one piece of double fabric with the batting in the middle and are ready to form your potato bag.

    • 4

Place your project on the table with the inside of the bag facing up. Measure and mark 2 inches down from the top of the bag, and then fold the bottom of the bag up to meet the mark. Fold the top over the 2 inches and pin it to create a flap for your bag. Be sure to pin it only through the top layer of fabric so you can turn the bag inside out.

    • 5

Turn the bag inside out, and then pin and stitch your 22 inch sides together to form your bag. Turn the bag back right side out to view your finished project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Embroider a potato on the center of the top piece of fabric before beginning your project to make your bag more attractive.

  • If you would like potato baker bags but do not want to make them yourself, many home crafters sell their finished projects.

  • Another alternative to potato bags is to purchase 100 percent cotton oven mitts and use them to bake your potatoes in when doing them in the microwave.

  • When baking potatoes in potato bags, wash and dry the potato and then wrap it in a paper towel before placing it in the bag. Do not prick or cut your potatoes when using these bags to cook them.

  • Let the bags air dry after use, before storage.
