How to Give the Bride Away

Save

The tradition of giving the bride away goes back to a time when a woman had few rights and privileges and her family viewed her as property. The father of the bride would literally give his daughter away to the groom and his family for social and monetary gains. Today, the tradition continues in order to show the family of the bride's support and blessing of the marriage.

  • Escort the bride to the church or ceremony site. As the person giving the bride away, it's your responsibility to get her to the wedding destination on time.

  • Walk the bride down the aisle. The bride should be on your left side. If she has an extremely long train, consider switching sides to avoid having to step over the train when you take your seat.

  • Set the pace as you walk down the aisle. Make sure the bride doesn't walk too fast. Pause for the photographer if he steps out to capture the moment on film.

  • Turn up the bride's veil and give her a kiss when you reach the groom. Be careful not to smudge her lipstick.

  • Shake the groom's hand and take a step back. Remain standing at the alter until the wedding officiator asks the question, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?"

  • Answer the wedding officiator's question with a statement the is agreeable to the bride, such as, "Her Mother and I." Then take your seat and enjoy the ceremony.
