How to Make an Ambient Light for a Computer
Modifying your computer box is one of life's little joys, especially when it winds up looking cool for little effort. With that in mind, you should undoubtedly do a little something to spruce up your computer. While modeling clay and spray paint aren't completely out of bounds, start with something a little simpler, like adding some lighting.
Things You'll Need
- Computer
- Internal light cables
- Replacement fans
- Clear panel
- Utility or craft knife
Instructions

1
Purchase internal light cables, including as many fans of the sizes currently located inside of your computer case.
-
2
Remove all external cables from your computer, making careful note of where each one went. Also remove any casing that prevents you from working on the inside.
-
-
3
Replace, one at a time, each internal cable that you've purchased a replacement for. This won't include smaller cables, such as the motherboard power cable. Run any extra length along the panel that you want to exude ambient light.
-
4
Install a clear panel in your computer case nearest your cabling if possible. If you don't want to do this, you can purchase a case available with windows already installed in it.
-
5
Cut into the windowing, as necessary, for positioning fans.
-
6
Replace the fans in a similar manner to that of the cabling: one at a time. Keep track of all the screws by placing them in a container that won't be mistaken for something else.
-
7
Return your case to its original position, restoring the side case and external cables to original configuration. After you complete this, the computer will have ambient lighting as soon as you turn it on.

Tips & Warnings
Some connections, such as the mouse and keyboard connectors, are often color-coded to avoid confusion. You can color others with colored tape or book tabs (the kind with one sticky end and one colored end).
