The refreshing smell of the forest is a wonderful scent to bring into your home, particularly if you have different sources for odors such as pets, kids, a teenager's shoes, or have a smoker in the home.If you prefer not to breathe the chemicals often present in commercial air fresheners, here’s how to create your own natural air freshener, with a refreshing forest scent.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pure essential oils
  • Mist spray bottle (4 fluid ounces)
  • Purified Water

Create a Forest Air Freshener

Step1
Choose 100% pure essential oils. Only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100% pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. Don’t use synthetic oils. They do not have the same benefits.
Step2
Choose which formula you prefer based on what you like to smell. There are a variety of forest formulas. Here are two: Formula #1 uses Spruce, Lavender, Eucalyptus, and Cedarwood essential oils, and Formula #2 uses Pine, Cajeput, Cypress and Sandalwood essential oils.
Step3
Prepare the mist spray bottle. Fill the bottle with 4 fluid ounces (or 120 ml) of purified water.
Step4
Add the essential oils for Formula #1. To the water, add 50 drops of Spruce, 25 drops each of Lavender and Eucalyptus, and 20 drops of Cedarwood. Cap the bottle and shake well to mix ingredients. Go to Step 6.
Step5
Add the oils for Formula #2. To the water, add 40 drops each of Pine and Cajeput, and 20 drops each of Cypress and Sandalwood. Cap the bottle and shake well to mix ingredients. Go to Step 6.
Step6
Spritz two to three sprays or more of the forest-scented mist in the air in each room where it’s needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Note that a forest-scented freshener can be used close to bedtime, as it tends to calm and relax.
  • Do a quick test spritz to make sure the bottle sprayer is releasing a fine mist, not a stream of liquid.
  • If you want to make a larger batch, simply increase the proportions, such as doubling or tripling the amounts. The mist spray will keep. You can use a larger spray bottle, if desired.
  • Store the mist bottle in a cool, dark place to protect the contents.
  • As the mist ages in the bottle it will grow stronger.
  • Consult a physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
