One of the most common complaints about dandruff shampoo is that it does absolutely nothing but fight dandruff. Many medicinal shampoos smell funny, make hair dry, brittle and lifeless and do not allow for styling at all. Furthermore, these shampoos often negate the effects of your conditioner, which makes your hair even harder to deal with. Many people opt to deal with dandruff rather than suffer with dandruff shampoo. However, there are ways to make your own favorite shampoo fight dandruff naturally.

From Quick Guide: Dandruff Treatment Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • Glass measuring cup
  • 1/3 oz. potash
  • 14 drops rosemary oil
  • 6 drops eucalyptus oil
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • Bottle of your favorite shampoo
  • Large plastic bottle
  • Spoon
  1. Step 1

Bring the water to a boil. The fastest way to do this is to microwave it on high for 2 minutes.

  2. Step 2
Potash is a potassium powder that will nourish your scalp and attack dandruff at its source.

Stir the potash into the boiling water. It should dissolve as you stir.

  3. Step 3

Allow the potash and water mixture to cool to room temperature. This will take about 20 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Pour the entire bottle of your shampoo into the mixing bowl. It should be a full or nearly full bottle.

  5. Step 5

Mix the potash and water with the shampoo. Your shampoo will be runnier than before, but still should be an even color and consistency. Mix the shampoo on a low speed to prevent frothing.

  6. Step 6

Stir in the rosemary and eucalyptus oils. Make sure that they are completely blended in.

  7. Step 7

Store your shampoo in the large plastic shampoo bottle. You can use it daily and it will fight dandruff and clean your hair as it did before.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your shampoo is high in silicone, it may be contributing to your dandruff problem. If your scalp does not heal after 2 weeks, see a dermatologist or try a new shampoo that is lower in silicone.
  • Test your shampoo by rubbing a small amount on the inside of your wrist to make sure that your additions will not irritate your skin.
