This article will teach the reader how to make blueberry dumplings.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The blueberry is one of the few fruits that are native to North America. Native Americans found many uses for the blueberry and it was considered a holy fruit. Parts of the plant were used as medicines as well. A tea was made from the leaves of the vine and was thought to be good for the blood. Juice from blueberries was used to treat various types of colds and flu. The juice was also used to dye cloth and basket making materials. Blueberries are very rich in anti-oxidants and are quite nutritious.

  2. Step 2

Making blueberry dumplings at home is a simple and easy task. It will be very easy for you to create your own family tradition from the basic example listed below.

    Ingredients for making blueberry dumplings:

    1 & 1 / 2 cups of all-purpose flour.

    2 tablespoons baking powder.

    1 / 8 teaspoon of salt.

3 tablespoons of shortening or butter.

    3 / 4 cup of whole milk.

4 cups of fresh blueberries. You can use canned or frozen blueberries if you like but you will get the best flavor from your blueberry dumplings if you use fresh blueberries.

    1 / 2 cup of sugar.

    2 cups of water.

  3. Step 3

    Directions for making blueberry dumplings:

Combine your blueberries, sugar, and water in a pot and allow to come to a boil on your stove. While waiting for this to happen measure your flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl and cut in the shorting. Stir in your milk until the mixture is consistent through and through. When your blueberries and sugar are boiling in the water, drop spoonfuls of the batter onto the hot berries. Cook uncovered for ten minutes. Then cover the pot and cook for ten more minutes or until the dumplings are fluffy.

Blueberry dumplings make a excellent winter dessert and are popular during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Serve with some vanilla ice cream for a creamy sweet treat that is tasty and filling. They are best served hot as soon as they are cooked.

Tips & Warnings
  • Blueberry dumplings are hot when served so be careful when eating them or you might get burned. Blueberry juice is very hot and tends to burn skin quickly.
