Lawn edgers are used in yard maintenance to cut away grass in hard to reach places such as driveways and sidewalks. Using a lawn edger is not hard and they are not expensive to buy. They do, however, make a huge difference in the appearance of your yard. Here's how to use a lawn edger.

From Quick Guide: Maintaining Your Lawn
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lawn edger
  • Safety goggles
  • Long pants
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Outlet or gas
  1. Step 1

Begin by starting up your edger. There are two types of edgers--gas and electric. That means there are two possible ways of starting your edger. Electric edgers require you to plug them in to some type of outlet and they will have a cord that hangs down. You can start this edger by plugging it in and squeezing the handle. Gas edgers work differently and have no cord. You will have a string that you will need to yank to start the edger.

  2. Step 2

Place your edger in between the pavement of the driveway or walkway and carefully pull or push it along that edge.

  3. Step 3

Use a heel to toe method where you walk one foot in front of the other. This will keep you in a straight line.

  4. Step 4

Continue on until you have successfully edged all sides of your walkways and driveways.

  5. Step 5

Shut off your edger and store it in a safe place like a garage. You don't want to leave it out in the rain or it will rust. If you have an electric edger make sure you wrap up your cord.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your kids in the house whenever you work outside with any type of mowing equipment.
  • Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris.
  • Wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt to protect your body from flying debris.
