Sump Pump

The intention of a sump pump is to keep a low area clear of water in case of minor flooding due to heavy rain or melting snow. Here are some tips to properly operate a sump pump. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Install the sump pump in a hole at least 25- to 30-inches deep. The pump should be located in the lowest part of the cellar or basement.

    • 2

Discharge the pump properly through the appropriate piping to a clear area where it will not drain back under the house.

    • 3

Plug the pump into a 20 amp dedicated circuit properly wired to a GFCI breaker. Make sure it is properly grounded.

    • 4

Prime the pump by filling the sump basin with water. The pump will kick on when the water reaches about 3 inches above the top of it.

    • 5

Let the pump run through several on off cycles to be sure it is working properly. Check all connections for leaks.

    • 6

Check to see if the pump is working properly. If your sump pump becomes inefficient, unplug it and service it by opening it and clearing any debris from the pump, valve and piping.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your pump is not performing properly, check the pit to see if there is any loose debris that may be intermittently blocking the intake.

  • Make sure your sump pump is properly maintained to keep from burning up the motor.
