  1. How to Follow the 12 Steps

      Find a 12-step program. Search the Web or use a phone directory to contact a 12-step program operating near your home or work. Choose a 12-step program that is appropriate. Common 12-step programs include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Over-Eater Anonymous and Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous.

      Attend a meeting. Attend a meeting to determine if the location, culture and structure of the meeting are appropriate for your needs.

      Learn the 12-step process. Read the 12-step code of behavior and other literature.

      Find a sponsor to guide you through the treatment process. Contact your sponsor during times of inner questioning, self-doubt, or temptation.

      Adopt a sober living lifestyle. Accept that you can only invite sober family and friends into your life at this time. Make sobriety the cornerstone of your life.

      Consider counseling to assist the treatment process. Work with a therapist to resolve the emotional turmoil that may have lead to the disease.
