How to Make a Sacred Alter
An altar is a special place of worship. All religions use altars to conduct their sacred rituals and they can range from extremely extravagant to very simple. But you do not have to leave your home to worship at an alter. You can create your own sacred altar at home, and decorate it with all of those items that are important to your style of worship. This can be a very special place of retreat, where you go to contemplate the issues of your life or simply to give thanks to whatever God you serve. Here is how to make a sacred altar at home.

Things You'll Need
- 1 round wooden or glass table
- 1 white silk tablecloth
- 1 blue candle (with holder)
- 1 red candle (with holder)
- 1 yellow candle (with holder)
- 1 green candle (with holder)
- 1 incense holder/ with incense stick
- 1 large clear quartz crystal
- Several sacred objects of your choice, ie figurines of Jesus, Buddha, religious deities.
- 1 bouquet of fresh flowers

Decide where to set up your altar. Will you make it the centerpiece of your home or a private place of worship? There is no right answer here—whatever you feel comfortable with is the right choice for you.

Place a small, round table in the worship area.

Cover it with a white silk tablecloth

Locate the four directions (North, South, East, and West) on the tabletop.

Set the blue candle in the north, the red candle in the south, the yellow candle in the east, and the green candle in the west.

In the center of the table, place a white candle.

Put an incense holder, with incense stick, in front of the white candle.

Place religious objects, such as pictures of Jesus, statuettes of Buddha, and statuettes of deities, around the candles in the north, south, east, and west on your sacred altar.

Place a large, clear quartz crystal in front of the incense.

Decorate your sacred altar with fresh flowers as much as possible.
