Fencing has been described as a live action chess game, for every move there is a counter, for every attack a defense. Even with such a wide variety of maneuvers to choose from, certain types of attacks have become more popular than others. One such attack is what's referred to as the flash attack. It is intended to drive straight at your opponent, and catch them off-guard. So, in this tutorial we will take a look at how to perform a flash attack in foil fencing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fencing Foil
  1. Step 1

Go to the On-Guard position in 6th.

  2. Step 2

Extend your foil. This is very important, as it is used to establish right of way, which is necessary to score a touch.

  3. Step 3

Use your back leg to push off against the strip and charge towards your opponent.

  4. Step 4

Hold your foil in line with the target area of your opponent’s lamë. Blade control is crucial, as any small deviance could ruin the attack.

  5. Step 5

Score a touch by continuing to rush past your opponent. You should always pass them on the same side as your weapon. If this maneuver has been executed correctly, your blade should hit them square in the chest just as you begin to come in range.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using the flash at close distance is the best way to obtain results.
