1
Find a tree with a sturdy branch. Make sure the branch is thick enough that when weight is tugging on it, it won't break. Hang from the branch and shake it a bit to test it out before you get your rope.
-
2
Place your ladder up against the tree branch and climb up to where you want to place the rope. Make sure it is far enough away from the tree that the kids won't swing on it and slam back in to the tree.

Get a thick long piece of rope and lope it around your branch. Tie a knot up at the top of the branch and then tie another knot over top of it. Double knotting it will ensure that the swing stays secure. If the first knot ever came undone you wouldn't fall and get hurt and you could climb up a ladder to tie a new knot.

Get off the ladder and go down to the ground where the rope has fallen. Tie knots in several different places. Make sure the knots are big enough for your child to sit on. Make at least 4 knots in different places. You can choose the height of the knots by looking at your kids and seeing where each one would be most comfortable on the swing.
-
5
Cut off any excess rope so that the rope does not touch the ground.
-
6
Try the rope swing out yourself first. Swing on it by sitting on a knot. Then try the rope swing again by standing on one of the knots and holding on to the rope up by your shoulder. Kids will want to play with the rope swing in many different ways such as sitting on it, standing on it, etc. You should try out all the methods to make sure it is completely sturdy.

Tips & Warnings
Consider using a tree by a lake and making the rope long enough that your kids could swing and drop in to the water.
Do not allow your children to use the swing until you have put it through some tests first. If you failed to make the knot tight enough of the rope is not thick enough, your kids will fall and get hurt.
