How to Organize a Bedroom for Better Sleep

Step1
Clear out all distractions. Multi-tasking in the bedroom sends your brain the wrong message. Anything that does not involve or promote sleep should be removed. This includes the television, books, computer and especially anything having to do with work. You want to condition yourself to associate lying in bed with sleeping not reading or watching TV.
Step2
Make your room dark. When it is dark outside, our brain begins to register that it is time to wind down. A blaring streetlight or the early morning sun can easily interfere with a restful slumber. Purchasing black out shades or curtains can make a big difference.
Step3
Get comfortable. Hate your mattress? Get a new one. The cost of a new mattress is more than worth it if it will eliminate nights spent restlessly tossing and turning.
Step4
Soothe yourself to sleep with sound. Investing in a sound machine will help lull you to sleep by listening to the relaxing sound of ocean waves or drops of rain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scents such as lavender and vanilla are known for their calming effects. Misting a scent on your bedsheets can help your body relax and encourage you to drift off to sleep more quickly.
