As a fireman in the United Kingdom, you have peoples' lives in your hands. Protecting people and their homes is one of the most honorable professions you could pursue. Things You'll Need:

  • Strong physical shape
  • Sharp mind
  1. Step 1

Fill out the Fire and Rescue Service application if you are at least 18 years or older. This form will collect basic information on your background and research any criminal background you may have. These forms are for screening purposes and not an actual application to allow you to become a firefighter in the United Kingdom. Be very thorough and careful about your responses. More than 90 percent of the applicants wash out in this first step. If you have made it through the application screening, then you can take the psychological test.

  2. Step 2

Take the 3-hour psychological test. There are three sectioned tests that screen applicants for their ability to work with numbers, their comprehension of information and problem solving abilities. If you pass the psychological test, they will send you off to the physical testing.

  3. Step 3

Pass the general medical screening test you will have to pass with a physician. Once you have passed this test, you can go onto the physical test to become a firefighter in the United Kingdom. There are currently six tests that make up the National Firefighter Physical Tests. These six tests include your abilities in enclosed spaces, a ladder climb, ladder lifting, fire equipment assembly and carrying equipment. If you pass the physical test, you will be able to interview for the firefighter position.

  4. Step 4

Next, take the one-on-one interview. This personal interview will consist of questions to judge your character, ability to solve problems and other subjective matters. If you pass this test, you will take your final medical test.

  5. Step 5

Take your final medical test conducted by a general physician. The tests that will be performed will be a hearing test, step test, lung capacity test and physical stamina test.

  6. Step 6

Expect continued training throughout your career as a firefighter in the United Kingdom.

Tips & Warnings
