Everyone must at some point or another work in a group or in teams. Whether it be for work, school, sports, or other activities, teamwork is an important part of life. That being said, some people know how to function in a group or team more successfully than others, contributing to the overall success and benefit of the team. If you want to be a good team player, then follow the steps in this article.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Always meet your deadlines on time. Quite often, as a member of a team, you are personally responsible for one part of a larger group project. It is imperative that you meet your deadlines on schedule.
Step2
Be candid and honest with other team members and with supervisors. If something isn't working well, be forthright about it. Also, clearly communicate important and worthwhile information important to the goals of the team and the overall success of the team. Information should be shared freely among group and team members so that everyone is operating on the same wavelength.
Step3
Adapt quickly to changes and offer to change your schedule or work habits if it benefits the overall team. Also, come to the table with a good attitude. Being flexible to new initiatives or changes to the status quo is an important trait of a good team player. Effective team players are also often agents and champions of change and are able to explain to the team mates why the change is necessary and why it will be a positive step in the right direction for the group.
Step4
Appreciate the work styles of others so that you know which team members are best suited for particular tasks in order to more efficiently and effectively meet the broader goals of the group, team, or organization. In other words, be open to easily working with people who may approach things differently than you do.
Step5
Avoid group and team politics. Don't let yourself get distracted by small disagreements or petty issues that aren't important to the team's overall mission, vision, and goals. Be cooperative, not competitive, with other members of the team. Team players are also good negotiators. By developing good diplomatic negotiating skills, you can effectively diffuse what might be a tense situation and turn it into a win-win situation for all involved.
Step6
To be a good team player, it is also important that you be a good listener. Team members who genuinely and effectively listen to one another can more efficiently come together to work towards the goals of the team. Be patient and respectful of what other team members have to say.
Step7
Another important step to being a good and effective team player is to choose to remain happy and optimistic. Show your enthusiasm for the goals, mission, and vision of the team and you will effectively motivate other team members to jump on board. This demeanor will also fosters positive thinking throughout the group, increasing chances of successful outcomes. Help to celebrate the groups success and also help the team learn from any setbacks along the way. Don't make excuses or complain, and don't let negative items get you down.
