Ghost orchids are a delicate, beautiful and difficult to grow species of orchid. This is one plant that will take some tender loving care and a green thumb, but the beauty of the flowering orchid makes it well worth it. We're going to look at some ways you can make your flower a success.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase several ghost orchid seedlings. It's almost a given that someone trying to grow the orchids for the first time is going to kill a few, but this will also allow you to learn how to keep an observant eye on the seedlings and troubleshoot a problem before it becomes fatal.

  2. Step 2

Plant your orchid in a terrarium. This will give the orchid two of the major components it needs for a successful growth cycle; the humidity must be very high, and the air around the plant must be still.

  3. Step 3

Use only distilled water on your ghost orchid, as the chemicals in tap water can damage or kill your delicate plant. You should have a layer of moss in the terrarium; make sure this dries out fairly well between waterings. Don't keep the plant in standing water.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you keep the humidity constantly high, otherwise the plant will shrivel and dry up. You can spray the air inside the terrarium with some of the distilled water, but make sure you don't keep the plant standing in water, as this can rot the roots. Ghost orchids require a delicate balance.

  5. Step 5

Place your orchid in a spot where it can receive moderate sunlight at first. Once it has begun to grow and you are trying to encourage it to flower, you can move it to a place with full sunlight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ghost orchids are very difficult, so don't give up!
  • There may be special care that is required for the environment you are in; you should be getting your seedlings from a reputable place, so check with them.
  • Ghost orchids are an endangered species. When you purchase your seeds, make sure you're buying from a legal source.
