For the fourth mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, you stick with the Marines as they attempt to get through the night in hostile territory. The action here is similar to the action in level three, but the difficulty ramps up a notch. Not only will the fire be hotter, the night setting will cut visibility and make it harder to determine where fire is coming from. Precision, pace and teamwork are essential for survival in this level.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An XBOX 360 or PS3
  • Copy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

    Ambush

  1. Step 1

You will start out on a raised highway under light fire, where your squad leader will inform you that your mission is to find and defend an immobilized Abrams tank. Follow your team straight ahead along the highway

  2. Step 2

The fire doesn't stay light for long--you will soon be caught in a massive ambush. Enemies will fire on your squad's position from several levels of a bombed out building to the right of the road. Take cover immediately.

  3. Step 3

Don't stay in one place too long, however. To do so is just asking to be picked apart by enemy fire. You need to do something about the enemies in the building. It's tempting to try to take a few out from the highway, but doing so will only draw fire. Do not rush straight in and try to find cover--there isn't any. Instead, look for a small semi-hidden path to the right of the enemy held structure.

  4. Step 4

Once inside, switch to night vision. This will give you a tremendous advantage over your enemies, but they won't be entirely helpless. Proceed through the building, removing enemies where you can.

  5. Step 5

You will come to a stairwell where one of your teammates will engage an enemy in hand-to-hand combat. Help him out, but aim carefully. Hitting him will result in mission failure.

  6. Step 6

Eventually you will come to a wall-mounted heavy machine gun. Use it to take out the majority of the remaining enemies in the structure. Keep in mind that the heavy gun can shoot through the building's walls like tissue paper.

  7. Step 7

You will need to follow your team out of the building, as you need them to open the door for you to continue the level.

  8. Heavy artillery

  9. Step 1

Around this time you will begin facing enemies with sniper rifles. Switch out your secondary weapon for one of these. Your default primary weapon will do fine for the sparse indoor areas in this level, and there are several places where the range and precision of the sniper riffle will give you a great advantage.

  10. Step 2

You will have to proceed through several streets and courtyards. Stick with your team and move between cover points. Take out distant enemies with your sniper rifle, but switch to your assault riffle if they get too close. Trying to use a sniper rifle on enemies closer than the sniper rifle's effective field of fire will often result in a quick death.

  11. Step 3

Eventually your squad leader will instruct you to pick up a Javelin rocket launcher to destroy a group of enemy armor on route to the downed Abrams tank. The Javelin can be found by a fallen Marine on the ground, but you will have to go to the second level of a nearby building to effectively target the enemy tanks. It's a good idea to leave your assault riffle behind--your sniper rifle will be more effective against the enemies you will face as you use the Javelin.

  12. Step 4

Target the tanks by lining them up in the white targeting box for several seconds. After you get a lock, just fire the rocket and it will do the rest.

  13. Step 5

There are groups of enemies lining the highway protecting the enemy tanks. Take a few seconds to clear them out with your sniper rifle, or they might pick you off while you are targeting the tanks.

  14. Step 6

After the enemy vehicles are destroyed, go back and retrieve your assault rifle. You won't have any more use for the Javelin.

  15. Call in the Calvary

  16. Step 1

After ridding the war of the enemy tanks, follow your teammates through a fence--you are almost to your allied tank.

  17. Step 2

Once there, take up a position behind the tank. This is the most protected position from enemy fire.

  18. Step 3

There will be targets everywhere, but concentrate on finding enemies with RPGs. Too many RPG hits on your Abrams will result in mission failure. Use your sniper rifle here and stay crouched. Tall grass and weeds won't provide cover from bullets, but they will hide you quite effectively while you scope out your targets.

  19. Step 4

You will soon receive word of a nearby AA gun and subsequent orders to destroy it. Drop your sniper rifle for whatever medium range assault weapon you can find--its role in this level has come to an end.

  20. Step 5

The AA gun is located in the courtyard of a building on the far right of the bog. A direct assault is nearly tantamount to suicide--head for the metal sheets directly in front of the Abrams tank. From here you will be able to access a protected location adjacent to the building protecting the AA gun.

  21. Step 6

Take out as many enemies as you can from long range, then dash across the open area dividing you from the objective building. There will be several more enemies inside. Take them out and make your way to the AA gun.

  22. Step 7

With the AA gun out of the war, it's time to call in the cavalry. Head to the glowing marker and deploy a beacon. Head back to the Abrams tank as the Air Force deals with the rest of the enemies in the area. Congratulations--the Abrams will survive to fight another day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save all grenades until you actually get to the tank. This is a more difficult area and the enemies are generally grouped closer anyways. Explosive ordinance is essential for your assault on the AA gun.
  • This is the first level where moving as the optimal pace is essential for success. Moving too fast or two slow will result in your team being caught in overwhelming enemy fire. Only stay in one spot long enough to take out the majority of visible enemies before moving on.
