First of all, it is important to know the general characteristics of rude behavior and rude people. Rude people often: expect you to cater to them and their every need; make inappropriate comments at inappropriate times; lack basic etiquette skills and basic manners; take things you do for them, or anyone else does for them, for granted; and treat people with no respect or are downright disrespectful all around.

Once you are prepared for the above mentioned typical behaviors associated with rudeness and rude people, you are now ready to not be upset by rude people when you come across them and their rude behavior.

One way to handle or deal with a rude person is directly address this rude individual. This must be done in a straightforward, kind and polite way, with a smile. In this manner, let the rude person know that their rude behavior bothers you. This is liable to get you another rude comment in return, but occasionally you can make a positive mark on a rude person.

Another way to handle or deal with a rude person is to not take it personally. Don't feel personally assaulted or criticized by a rude person and their rude behavior because most rude people are habitually rude to everyone, not just you. Yet another way to handle or deal with a rude person is to change your reaction if you are unable to get through to the particular individual. More often than not a rude person won't change their rude behavior. So don't feel bad if your attempts to reach out to them in order to help them change to a more positive behavior doesn't work. Ultimately you can decide to ignore their petty, rude behavior and not let it bother you. Always remain positive, cheerful, helpful, kind, and happy towards others, and you will see that this in and of itself will help you and your inner reactions in many situations, including interactions with a rude person.
