Calling the cops on nosy neighbors is not always an option. Sometimes, more drastic measures are required. There are many ways to soundproof a window. The biggest task is deciding which way works best. Here’s how to soundproof a window.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy soundproof windows. This is the simplest solution for those with the funds to invest in soundproof windows. An Internet search will reveal a variety of companies that offer the service. Some replace the existing window while others provide an additional pane to contain the sound.

  2. Step 2

Use felt pad on the walls and windows. This may not be the most aesthetic solution, but it is a frugal way to get the job done. Felt pad is available in most hobby stores. It may also be found in stores like Home Depot. Staple felt to the walls. Tape or glue the felt to windows and the job is complete.

  3. Step 3

Avoid obstructing the window to the point of preventing a potential escape. Diminishing the sound that enters a room should not hinder safety. Any solution to soundproof a window should make sense in the event of a fire or any other need to exit the building promptly.

  4. Step 4

Try a combination of heavy drapes and window plugs. This solution would allow the user to reverse the soundproof status of a window if and when needs change. Heavy drapes may be purchased at any home furnishings store and window plugs may be found at a Lowe’s or Home Depot. This would be a middle ground solution in terms of total cost.
