    Budgeting Family Vacations

  1. Step 1

Do extensive research and talk to several travel agents before you book your flight and room. Researching will give you an idea of the available rates and deals. A good travel agent will be able to get you great deals and potentially save you a lot of money.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you will fly or drive to your destination. If you decide to drive, pack a cooler of food and drinks. This will keep you from spending money at fast food restaurants and diners that you see along the road. Moreover, get a tune-up and put air in your tires. This will give your car better mileage, and save you lots of money. If you decide to fly, pick flights at odd hours like midnight because those flights are cheaper. Try to get a discounted ticket from your airline by talking to customer service representatives.

  3. Step 3

Book a hotel early for the cheapest rates. The earlier you book (like a few months in advance), the cheaper the rates will be. Also, try booking a hotel in their off season when rates are significantly cheaper. Another option is to book a hotel that is not located in the center of the city, but still near the spots you want to visit. Hotels in the center of the city are traditionally very pricey.

  4. Step 4

Buy food from local markets or food stores near your hotel. Going out to a restaurant several times a day can be quite costly. Instead, buy bread, cheese, cold cuts, fruit and drinks from the local grocer. The food prices at markets are always significantly cheaper than at restaurants.

  5. Step 5

Make a list of all the items you will need. This assures that you won't have to spend money on items that you simply forgot to pack. Walk through your home and write down essential items that you will be needing on your trip such as toothpaste, shampoo and bathing suits. Check everything off the list as you put it in your suitcase.
