Baseball is a great sport and our nation's pastime. It offers the young and old the chance to learn about teamwork and camaraderie, as well as good spirited competitiveness and skills such as hand eye coordination and hitting a ball.If you're looking to have a field where baseball can be played, you'll need a dugout for each team. This article will explore how to construct a baseball dugout.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Constructing a Baseball Dugout

  1. Step 1

Determine who will use the baseball dugout. It might be small children under eight years of age, children ages 8 to 12, teenagers or adults. This knowledge will be necessary in finding out what things you need in the dugout, as well as how big it needs to be.

  2. Step 2

Figure out your budget for the baseball dugout. If you have a small budget, you may have to give up some extras, such as cushioned seating in the dugout and an installed water cooler.

  3. Step 3

Determine what you will need in the dugout. A basic baseball dugout has somewhere to put all types of equipment, and somewhere for the players to sit. If you go basic, you need a long bench, and a place to put the bats, the balls, the mitts, and the batting helmets. You might want a space for a cooler of water at one end of the dugout. If you are going to go all out, you'll want each person to have their own labeled space for their items, and a place to hang jackets. You can decide other extras you might want.

  4. Step 4

The basic dugout construction will be made of wood. You need a back wall for the dugout, a roof for the dugout and posts to hold up the roof and back wall. Then, you will build shelves into the back wall to place the equipment. The bench can also be made of wood.

  5. Step 5

The sides and front of the dugout will be fencing. This protects the players from fowl balls, but also allows the players to see what is going on during the game. In major league baseball, the players do not have the fencing, but rather have a shorter wooden wall to block some fowl balls. This doesn't offer as much protection--for children especially--you will probably want the fencing. You want a chain link metal fence. The fence should go across the front of the dugout, and on the sides with openings in each side for entrance into and exit from the dugout.

Tips & Warnings
  • A basic dugout construction doesn't have to be expensive. You can make it just what you need to serve your purposes without getting into unnecessary expenses.
  • When designing the dugout, you want to make sure you have enough room for all the players to sit on the bench. Make the dugout long enough to serve this purpose.
  • Make sure you consider all the slots you will need for equipment on the shelving so you don't find out later that you have something with nowhere to place it.
