How to Play Tether Ball
Tether ball is a great game--and terrific exercise--for two players. It’s a good idea to discuss (and agree on) the rules ahead of time because tetherball is one of those games that has a huge variety of rules depending on where it’s being played.

How to Play Tether Ball
-
1
Stand on one side of the pole. Your opponent will stand on the opposite side of the pole.
-
2
Decide who will be the first server (We’ll say that’s you for this example).
-
-
3
Serve the ball by holding it up with one hand and hitting it with the other hand (Note: Although an open hand is usually used, some rules permit use of the fist). You, as the server, will attempt to hit the ball in such a way that it will wind itself completely around the pole in a clockwise direction.
-
4
Counter-attack: Your opponent then tries to hit the ball, forcing it to go counterclockwise, so that it will not wrap itself around the pole in a clockwise direction but instead in a counterclockwise direction.
-
5
Don't break the rules which include the following: 1.) You may not hit the ball more than once on your turn.2.) You may not stop the ball and then serve it.3.) You may not move onto your opponent’s side of the playing area.4.) You may not hit the rope.
-
6
Consider the game over when one player has succeeded in wrapping the rope completely around the pole so that the ball is above the four-foot or other designated mark on the pole.
-
7
Play best-of-seven matches so that one player is proclaimed the winner when of the match when he has won four games.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not have a tether ball pole, you can buy a complete tether ball set from most sporting goods stores or you might try making one by digging a two foot hole in the ground and placing a 12 foot 4 x 4 in the hole, pour cement around it and allow a day or so for the cement to cure. (Make sure you use a level to ensure that the pole is straight.)
Tie one end of a 10 foot nylon rope to a one inch eye hook screwed into the top of the pole and tie the other end of the rope to the tether ball and you're ready to play.
