How to Make a Natural Herbal Mouthwash
I don't like the taste of mouthwash that you buy from a store. Most of them have chemical additives that give them a sweet taste. And unless you buy a natural mouthwash from the health food store, the flavorings in them probably aren't all natural.
There are a lot of great ingredients found in nature that encourage healthy teeth and gums. Some herbs, like aloe vera, sooth inflamed and bleeding gums. Essential oils like tea tree, clove and cinnamon are great for killing bacteria. Witch hazel and chamomile are also effective for strengthening and soothing the gums.
Remember, mouthwash doesn't replace flossing and brushing. They both should be done. However, if you replace your regular mouthwash with something homemade, you'll be protecting your gums and teeth naturally instead of with chemicals.
Though I normally prefer herbs over essential oils, I turn to essential oils for mouthwashes because the end result lasts longer. A mouthwash made from herbal infusions would only last a week. The following recipe for herbal mouthwash will last for several weeks if stored properly.
Things You'll Need
- 1/4 cup aloe vera juice
- 1/4 cup witch hazel
- 1/8 cup distilled water
- 1 drop tea tree essential oil
- 1 drop mint essential oil
- 1 drop chamomile essential oil
- Amber glass jar

Add the essential oils one at a time. Cover and shake vigorously for about a minute. Cork or cap it and let it sit on the counter for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, refrigerate it.

Let it sit in the refrigerator for 24 hours or so before you use it. To use, add 2 tablespoons of the mouthwash to a small cup of warm water (about 1/4 cup). Gargle for one minute and spit. Do not rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't like the taste of tea tree oil you can substitute it for one drop of cinnamon essential oil.
If you have any pain, tenderness, excessive bleeding or loose teeth, make sure you see a dentist.
Store the mouthwash away from heat and light; the refrigerator is ideal.
