Air fresheners can make a home smell so much better-particularly if you have pets, kids, have cooked something like fish, or have a smoker in the home. But breathing the chemicals often present in commercial air fresheners may not be something you want to do. Here’s how to create your own natural air freshener, with an uplifting spicy scent.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pure essential oils
  • Mist spray bottle (4 fluid ounces)
  • Purified Water

Make a Spicy-Scented Air Freshener

Step1
Choose 100% pure essential oils-only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100% pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. Don’t use synthetic oils-they do not have the same benefits.
Step2
Choose which formula you prefer based on what you like to smell. There are a variety of spicy formulas. Here are two. Formula #1 uses Caraway, Anise, Cinnamon, Ginger, Clove and Lime essential oils. Formula #2 uses Marjoram, Sage, Spearmint, Clove and Patchouli.
Step3
Prepare the mist spray bottle. Fill the bottle with 4 fluid ounces (or 120 ml) of purified water.
Step4
Add the oils for Formula #1. To the water, add 35 drops of Caraway essential oil, 20 each of Anise, Cinnamon, and Ginger, 15 of Clove and 10 of Lime. Cap the bottle and shake well to mix ingredients. Go to Step 6.
Step5
Add the oils for Formula #2. To the water, add 25 drops each of Marjoram, Sage, Spearmint, and Clove and 20 drops Patchouli essential oil. Cap the bottle and shake well to mix ingredients. Go to Step 6.
Step6
Spritz 2-3 or more sprays of the mist in the air in each room where it’s needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Note that a spicy-scented freshener should not be used close to bedtime, as it tends to energize.
  • Do a quick test spritz to make sure the bottle sprayer is releasing a fine mist, not a stream of liquid.
  • If you want to make a larger batch, simply increase the proportions, such as doubling or tripling the amounts. The mist spray will keep. You can use a larger spray bottle, if desired.
  • Store the mist bottle in a cool, dark place to protect the contents.
  • As the mist ages in the bottle it will grow stronger.
  • Do not use essential oils if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant without getting professional advice.
