Determine if you want to mount your Roman blind on the inside of the window (jamb to jamb) or on the outside (bracket to bracket). If you are doing an inside mount, you will need to determine the width and length size of the Roman blind that you will need to purchase.

    • 2

Measure the inside of your window in three places: Top, middle and bottom. When doing an inside mount, you will need to take the smallest width to determine the width of your blind. This will help the blind to operate smoothly as you raise and lower it. The next step is to measure the length of your window from the longest part of the window to determine the length of your blind. An outside mount is your other option and is the easiest of the two mounting options. Determine where you want your Roman blind to begin at the top of your window and how far you want the blind to extend beyond the window, from both sides. Often, blinds are installed to keep the sun from coming in. You will want to cover what is called the "light strike." The sun's rays will seep through the sides of the blind, depending on what time of the day it is.

Purchase your Roman blind at your favorite retail store. Determined how you want to mount the blind on the window. Install the window brackets that usually come with the blind kit. Install carefully. The Roman blind should not make contact with the top of the window frame, when mounting an inside mount, or any other obstruction when raised and lowered. Before installing the brackets, you will need to position the mount brackets inside the window frame. The brackets need to be aligned and level with one another, on both sides of the window. Once the blind is installed, it should move freely between the brackets.

Avoid contact. The Roman blind should not make contact with the top of the window frame, when mounting an outside mount, or any other obstruction when raised and lowered. Before installing the brackets, position the mount brackets outside the window frame, clearing all obstructions. The brackets need to be aligned and level with one another, on both sides of the window. Once the blind is installed, it should move freely between the brackets. Be sure to allow 1/8 inch of additional space between the brackets so the mechanism will rotate freely.
