Things You'll Need:
- Yoga mat
- Instructional video
- Large room with tile or hardwood floor
-
Step 1
Prepare to lead an Ashtanga yoga class by watching videos of the movements at home. Even if you have been doing Ashtanga yoga for many years, this will provide you with tips on poise and presentation. Watch how the leader carries herself and announces new poses.
-
Step 2
Determine which series you want to use with your first Ashtanga yoga class. If you'll be working with beginners, who don't have much experience, the primary or Intermediate series is most likely the best way to go. For more advanced students, the Advanced A or B series will be appropriate, but don't attempt a C or D class on your first try.
-
Step 3
Assemble a class of five to seven students for your first Ashtanga yoga class. It is important to have a large enough group that a class is a worthwhile use of your time, but if you invite too many students for your first few classes, you might become overwhelmed. This type of yoga is highly specialized and requires keen concentration.
-
Step 4
Begin class by reciting the Ashtanga mantra together as a group. This will prepare you for the class ahead and center your thoughts on the movements themselves.
-
Step 5
Begin to lead your Ashtanga yoga class in several Sun Salutations, then continue with whatever series you've chosen to present.
-
Step 6
Watch your students in a full wall mirror in the classroom, or reverse your own movements so you can watch the class yourself. You'll want to be able to correct positions or provide suggestions as you continue the series, and it's important that you're able to spot any problems before they become serious.
-
Step 7
Stop your own execution of the positions to walk among your students. Help them correct positions or slow their breathing whenever it seems appropriate.
-
Step 8
Conclude your Ashtanga yoga class with the end of the aforementioned mantra. Then, when everyone seems centered, offer juice or other healthy refreshments to inspire community.
