If you can stand on your deck and make movement while moving back and forth then you may consider installing deck supports. This is best for older decks that have just worked their way loose over the years. Things You'll Need

  • 4x4 pressure treated lumber or lumber to match existing deck / 3 feet per post
  • 3 inch nails or screws / 8 per post
  • Handsaw or skill power saw
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Hammer or screw gun
  • Measuring square

  1. How to build deck support brackets

      Cut your 4x4 lumber into 16 inch lengths. You will need two per post.

      Cut two 45 degree angles, as pictured

      To make a single brace, mark and cut a 45-degree angle on both ends of each board. The marks should be in opposite directions.

      Place a brace on one side of a deck post, as pictured. Secure each brace with two nails or screws on top and bottom. Make sure these are spaced evenly into existing post and top beam.
