Few things can be more interesting to an avid reader than a book talk from one of his favorite authors. At a book talk, an author will generally give some insight into her latest book and perhaps read a passage or two from it. She will then usually take some questions from the audience.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Local book stores
  • Library
  • Email address
Step1
Contact several book stores in your area and inquire if they hold book talks. Make a list of the ones nearby that host book talks.
Step2
Sign up for their email list. Most bookstores will send out a monthly newsletter that highlight their upcoming events, including any and all book talks they'll be having that month. They may even send out an email blast strictly to inform customers of upcoming talks. Make sure you're on their email list so you get the notifications early.
Step3
Go to your local library and inquire about the frequency of their book talks. They may offer some kind of notification service or newsletter regarding upcoming talks. Keep an eye out for any fliers posted in their lobby regarding book talks.
Step4
Visit colleges and universities in your area. Many host celebrated authors for on-campus book talks. Inquire regarding their policy on who can attend. Most schools will welcome non-students to attend.
Step5
Go to the website of your favorite author. He will undoubtedly have an email list where you can add your name and email address. You'll then receive a notification when he is going on his next book tour. Make sure to catch him when he comes to your area.
Step6
Check out artistic coffee shops in your area. Many coffee shops hold special nights that may feature authors or artists.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you attend a book talk, remember to bring a book by that author. She can then sign your copy for you. If you want to purchase her latest book, the book store will undoubtedly be selling it.
  • If the bookstore requires attendance confirmation, make sure to sign up early, particularly for popular authors.
