How to Build a Character in Writing

A well-rounded character is a priority in a story, for it will determine whether or not the reader will want to continue reading your story. Having a solid character inside and out will not only draw the reader's attention towards the character, but will further develop your story. Consider the following characteristics in building a character:

Things You’ll Need:

  • pencil
  • paper
  • a clear frame of mind
Step1
Determine age. Hold old is the character?
Step2
Determine outside appearances. Is the character beautiful? Tall?
Step3
Consider flaws. Do these flaws help shape the character's personality?
Step4
Speech patterns. How do you suppose your character will like?
Step5
Ethnic background. Does the character's background help shape his/her's perception on life?

Tips & Warnings

  • The goal is to build a character that the reader can envision. Details are essential.
  • Do not copy a character, but create your own. Half of the fun of writing a story is developing the characters.
