Hepatitis B is a very serious illness that attacks the liver and it is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B causes inflammation of the liver and it may eventually lead to liver cancer, liver failure or scarring of the liver. People can get infected with hepatitis B through sexual contact, by using infected utensils (such as needles for drugs or tattoos) or being exposed to an open cut or wound of an infected person. Many people fully recover from an "acute" hepatitis B infection, but "chronic" hepatitis B is a lifelong illness and there is no cure for it. However, there are a few things that you can do to recover from hepatitis B.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Meet with your doctor to discuss treatment options. Your doctor can evaluate your situation and talk to you about things that you can do to recover from the hepatitis B infection. Since an acute hepatitis B infection is a short-term infection (can last for up to 6 months), you normally do not need to take any type of drugs or medications for it. However, your doctor may make adjustments to your diet, recommend that you drink more fluids, suggest that you get plenty of rest and encourage you to avoid things that can harm your body, such as smoking.

  2. Step 2

Follow a healthy diet plan. It is important to eat healthy while you are recovering from hepatitis B. You should try eating foods that are nutritional and high in protein and fiber and also eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Your doctor can help you develop a healthy and well-balanced diet plan to follow.

  3. Step 3

Drink plenty of fluids. To help you recover from the hepatitis B infection, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. You can also drink other things such as orange juice and fruit juices, low-fat milk and tea on a daily basis.

  4. Step 4

Get an adequate amount of rest. Your body needs plenty of rest while you are recovering from the hepatitis B infection. If necessary, reduce your daily activities and work schedule and try to refrain from doing any stressful tasks.

  5. Step 5

Avoid using things that can harm your body, such as alcohol and tobacco. These particular products can actually worsen your condition and make it more difficult for you to fully recover from the hepatitis B infection.

  6. Step 6

Take the appropriate medications as prescribed by your doctor. Although there are no anti-viral medications used to treat an acute hepatitis B infection, your doctor may prescribe you medications for certain symptoms associated with hepatitis B. For example, he may give you a pain medication for body aches or aspirin for a fever. Be sure to follow your doctor’s directions and do not take any medication unless approved by your doctor.

  7. Step 7

Visit your doctor at the end of the recovery period. Your doctor tells you when you should see him for a follow-up appointment (within six months or less). She gives you blood tests in order to confirm that you have fully recovered from the hepatitis B infection.
