How to Manage Vaginitis
Step1
Pinpoint one of the three common culprits of vaginitis to make managing the discomfort much easier. Either candidiasis (yeast infection), trichomoniasis, or bacterial vaginosis can be a cause and each can cause discharge, painful itching, swelling, and, if left untreated, more severe vaginal infections. Seeing a medical professional or gynecologist for a culture will determine the exact cause.
Step2
Treat the infection through pills or creams by the recommendation of the medical professional. However, it will take days before you see permanent change toward the reduction of the infection. In the meantime, be sure to avoid scratching the area, which can chafe the sensitive area of the genitalia and create a longer healing process and more initiation in the area. You should also avoid rough bathing or shaving until the infection begins to clear.
Step3
Find temporary relief while the prescription medication is at work. Topical creams for the vaginal area created by many of the same over-the-counter companies who produce yeast infection medications can work to reduce itching while a more powerful medication works to fight the actual infection. A great home remedy which will reduce itching, soreness, and create a barrier for discharge contacting the vaginal area, is petroleum jelly. Also keeping the area clean with warm water and a sort washcloth will keep the infected discharge from causing more itching, discomfort, or a foul smell.
